WHY USE A STAINLESS STEEL FASTENER?
Simply put – moisture. Will your product/project or structure be exposed to moisture?
(Remember, humidity is moisture.) Do you want a quality product having both durability and appearance? Is strength and corrosion resistance important to you? Are you aware that the extra cost of stainless fasteners is minor when compared to the overall cost of most products and structures?
A recent study made by our nail supplier reveals the following:
Accelerated laboratory corrosion studies clearly demonstrate the superior corrosion resistance of stainless steel nails. This is particularly true in certain cases where the wood is chemically pressure treated. One such study compared nails made of a wide variety of materials over a one-year period at elevated temperature and moisture levels. At the end of the period only the AISI type 304 & 316 stainless steel nails showed no visible signs of corrosion in CCA and ACA treated wood.
Even high-quality, hot-dipped galvanized nails may react under wet conditions with preservative wood. In CCA & ACA treated wood, the zinc coating on galvanized fasteners will corrode sacrificially as positively charged zinc ions migrate toward the more noble copper compounds, which make these treatments resistant to fungal attacks.
Hammer blows to galvanized nails are highly likely to chip or crack the zinc coatings on at least some of the fasteners used on a project. Moisture, thus given even the slightest access to unprotected steel, subjects the entire nail to rapid deterioration.
Stainless steel nails are strong. The tensile strength of wire used to produce stainless steel nails ranges from 125,000 to 145,000 psi. The ultimate lateral loads for stainless steel nails are about 20% higher than comparable plain steel fasteners.
While the above statement primarily addresses nails, the logic is applicable to all types of fasteners whether they are nails, staples, screws, nuts, bolts, etc.
YOU DON’T NEED TO THINK LONG TO KNOW THAT
STAINLESS STEEL FASTENERS ARE THE ONES TO USE!!
